The alternative is to bury your head in the sand, or close your eyes and pray, whichever choice of words you prefer. This is a typical freeze response and it is a complete relinquishing of control. When you close your eyes to fear you leave everything to chance. All you can do is hope the danger leaves you alone, but how will you ever know? At what point do you open your eyes?

The answer is never, because until you open your eyes you never know whether or not the danger has passed.

Keep your fears in clear sight and you will see them for what they are. The strange noise at night that turns out to be a water pipe; the shadow that turns out to be a cat; the snapping twig that turns out to be a bird; the phone call that turns out to be good news.
